Information note: Use of biochar (charcoal) to replenish soil carbon pools, restore soil fertility and sequester CO2

Submission by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification
4th Session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the
Convention (AWG-LCA 4), Poznan, 1-10 December 2008

Our biochar proposal submitted to COP-14 in Poland (UN Climate Change Conference) was accepted by the UNFCCC for the dialogue for the post 2012 climate regime. This is an important step towards UN certified emissions reductions (CER) and clean development mechanism (CDM) projects.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) AfricaViewPoint encourage that African countries negotiate the inclusion of biochar tehcnniques as approved methodologies in the CDM.
